We're a referral service, not the engineer. We pass your enquiry to an independent local engineer, who quotes before doing any work.

While you wait: releasing the gate by hand

Almost every automated gate has a manual release so it can be opened during a power cut or fault. On underground motors it's usually a key-operated release near the hinge, sometimes under a cover plate. On ram and arm motors it's a key or lever on the motor itself. Sliding gates usually have a key-operated release on the motor housing.

Turn off the power to the gate first if you can. Once released, move the gate slowly by hand. Don't force it if it's jammed or damaged, and keep children and pets well clear. Leave it to the engineer if you're unsure.

What counts as urgent

  • You can't get a vehicle in or out
  • The gate won't close and the property is insecure
  • The gate moves unexpectedly or doesn't stop or reverse when it should
  • Visible damage, a leaning gate, or exposed wiring

Safety first

If a gate isn't stopping or reversing when something is in its way, switch it off at the isolator and don't use it until it's been checked. Automated gates are heavy and can cause serious injury.

Questions

Do emergency call-outs cost more?

Usually, yes. Same-day, evening and weekend call-outs carry a higher rate than a booked visit. The engineer will confirm the price on the phone before they set off.

What if I can't find the release key?

Tell the engineer the make of motor if you can see it. Release keys are brand-specific, and they can bring one.

Who will actually come out?

An independent, insured local gate engineer. We pass on your enquiry; they contact you, confirm the price and do the work. We don't send anyone without asking you first.
